How to add images to Google Calendar events from Google Drive

Give each event a cover image: attach a picture from Google Drive to your Google Calendar event and share it with Revisual.

Written by Piotr Poźniak

Revisual can show a cover image for each event. It uses the first attachment on a Google Calendar event, so the image needs to come from Google Drive and be shared with Revisual.

Images uploaded straight from your computer, without Google Drive, can't be read by Revisual.

Step 1: Create a folder for event images

In Google Drive, click New › New folder, give it a clear name (for example "Website event images") and click Create.

The folder can be in My Drive or on a shared drive, and it doesn't have to belong to the Google account you connected to Revisual. You can organise images in subfolders: folders you create inside it get the same sharing settings.

Step 2: Share the folder with Revisual

Click ⋮ next to the folder and choose Share › Share. Both of these settings are needed:

  1. Add [email protected] as a Viewer.

  2. Under General access, choose Anyone with the link, with the role Viewer.

Click Done.

Your images appear on your public website anyway, so making the folder viewable by link doesn't expose anything extra. Keep only event images in this folder.

Step 3: Turn on Events Attachments in Revisual

Step 3a: Go to Integrations, click ⋮ on your Google Calendar connection and choose Edit scopes and calendars.

Step 3b: On the Scopes tab, tick Events Attachments (optional) and click Sign in with Google.

You only need to do this once.

Step 4: Attach an image to your event

Step 4a: Upload the image to your shared folder.

Step 4b: In Google Calendar, open the event and click Edit event (pencil icon).

Step 4c: Click the attachment icon (paperclip) below the description, choose the image from your shared folder, and click Save.

When it's saved, the image shows as an attachment on the event:

If an event has several attachments, Revisual uses the first one.

Step 5: Sync

Your image appears after the next sync, usually within a few minutes. To see it straight away, click Resync on the Integrations page.

Image tips

  • Use JPG or PNG.

  • Use a 16:9 image, for example 1600 × 900 pixels, so it isn't cropped.

  • Keep files small so your widget loads fast. A free tool such as TinyPNG can compress them.

Working with a team

Teammates can add images too. Share the folder with each of them by name as an Editor, and ask them to upload event images to this folder and attach them from there.

Don't give Editor access through "Anyone with the link".

Using a shared drive or someone else's folder

Folders on shared drives work, including shared drives in another organisation's Google Workspace. So do folders other people share with you. The sharing rule is the same: Revisual's address as Viewer, and Anyone with the link as Viewer.

If you can't choose "Anyone with the link" for the folder, your Google Workspace admin may have turned off link sharing. Ask them to allow it for this folder or shared drive, or use a folder in My Drive.

Image not showing?

  • Check that the image is the first attachment on the event.

  • Open the folder's share settings and check both settings from Step 2.

  • Check that Events Attachments (optional) is ticked on the Scopes tab.

  • Click Resync.
